The best thing about living in Los Angeles is the abundance of fitness classes beyond the usual exercises. I’ve had the chance to learn how to pole dance, get my heart racing while bouncing on a trampoline, and plank on a wobbly surfboard. I’m always looking for new workouts that challenge different muscles so I decided to give aerial fitness another shot.
Pre Sweat
There’s nothing worse than running late for a class only to find that you have a flat tire. Thank goodness for Uber! Although I was dropped off at the studio, there is plenty of parking in the lot at the shopping center. I took the elevator (couldn’t find the stairs) to the second floor and headed into AIR Aerial Fitness. After signing in and filling up my water bottle—you will want water—I grabbed a mat and found a hammock that fell at hip height.
Sweat
We started by stretching and moved quickly into strength and cardio moves, doing tons of lunges, planks, tricep presses, and crunches and climbing/jumping up the hammocks. It was basically TRX with prettier straps. After working up a sweat, we moved into some tricks and learned how to flip upside down and lay down on the hammock in the air (pictures below). Don’t underestimate the arm and core strength needed to do these moves. I was in the back row close to the speaker so at times it was really hard for me to see/hear as Anna demonstrated each move. She went kind of quickly but then walked around to help us. I stopped a few times because the inverted moves made me feel lightheaded. We ended with another round of stretching and then grabbed our phones to take pictures!
Post Sweat
After class I walked across the street to take advantage of the studio’s proximity to the Beverly Connection with discount stores like Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx, and Ross. The high-end Beverly Center with Tiffany & Co, Bloomingdales, Kitson, Lorna Jane, UNIQLO, and many more, is also across the street.
Heading east on 3rd, you’ll run into Joan’s on Third, Magnolia Bakery (made popular from Sex and the City), Sushi Roku, Son of a Gun, and Toast. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is in the same shopping center as AIR if you need some caffeine.
Tricks of the Trade
- Don’t eat or drink too much before class. The inverted tricks will definitely make you feel nauseous on a full stomach.
- Get a spot closer to the front so the hammocks don’t block your view of the instructor.
- There are no showers but there is a water fountain in case you forget your bottle.
- Having a birthday or bachelorette party? For $395 you can rent out the studio and host a private class.
