There is nothing like the feeling of a great sweat on Thanksgiving morning! I knew I was going to reach for two+ slices of pie and an extra heaping of sweet potato casserole, so why not make it guilt free? I’ve also been dying to try a class at Aura but 3rd street is always traffic central.
Just as I hoped, the streets were absolutely empty, a Thanksgiving miracle! I got there in no time and found a spot in their parking garage. Aura Cycle validates for 90 minutes, but today there wasn’t even a parking attendant due to the holiday. When I walked in the studio, I told them it was my first time and they had me create an account. They handed me a pair of shoes (first pair free, then $3/class) and a water bottle (also free…pretty sure this was an accident). I put on the shoes, placed my things in a locker, and headed to my assigned bike where I found a towel waiting for me.
When the class began, the room was dark, the music loud, and the lights flashing. Jenna, the instructor, controlled the speed and color of the lights based on what we were doing, adding a lot to the ambiance. We spent 45 minutes doing sprints, hills, and tap backs while seated (first position), standing upright (second position), and bending over (third position).
During two full songs, we took our dumbbells out from under our seat and did upper body work. This included kickboxing moves, biceps curls, and triceps extensions. This spin class had the most upper body exercise I’ve seen because Jenna had us doing pushups on our handlebars throughout. In the hardest moments of class, Jenna offered words of encouragement. One thing she said that stuck with me was, “The sprint is temporary. The change is permanent.” Knowing that the pain would be over soon, I pushed myself so hard (wishing there was a screen displaying my speed and resistance). When class was over, there were cold eucalyptus-scented towels waiting.
Aura Cycle is in an ideal location (minus traffic). It is pretty much equidistant from The Grove and The Beverly Center/Connection and also near the very popular Toast and Joan’s on Third. There are so many great juice bars, cafés, and boutiques around here; I would recommend taking a quick shower at Aura (bathroom pictured below) and then heading out to explore!
Tricks of the Trade
- Check your dumbbells before you start. There will already be some under your seat but make sure they’re the ones you want. I got 2 pounders.
- If loud music bothers you, grab some earplugs at the front desk beforehand.
