Studio Openings and Free Classes

October seems to be the month of studio openings in my neighborhood and you won’t hear me complaining! Three awesome studios that keep the west side sweaty are moving inland to grace us with their killer workouts.

My Top 10 Tidbits of Wedding Advice

There are a lot of moving pieces when planning a wedding that don’t come together until the big day finally arrives. While anything can happen, the more you plan for the day the less likely you’ll be surprised by something that comes up. Fresh out of my wedding month, I am sharing my top ten tips that I learned in hopes that they will help make your special day perfect.

Create a Pinterest board. This is the best way to figure out what type of wedding you’re going for and makes it easy to convey to your vendors, especially the florist. I spent a lot of time searching “pink, navy, and gold weddings” for ideas on how to use my color scheme. I pinned anything that caught my eye and shared it with my bridesmaids and florist.

2Don’t let people talk you out of your budget. Decide what categories you are going to splurge on before meeting with vendors. It sounds really easy to just “throw things in” while you’re meeting with the vendor but if you do this with each one, the price goes up dramatically.

3If you have two left feet, take dance lessons. Your first dance is a very special time where the entire room will be looking right at you. Instead of looking like middle schoolers swaying back and forth with no purpose, invest in a few dance lessons. We waited until two weeks before the wedding (oops) but managed to get in five lessons with dance instructor Amy Lawrence. She taught us a slow version of the West Coast Swing to “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green complete with choreographed turns and a dip at the end. Not only were the lessons a great bonding experience, but also we looked like we knew what we were doing!

4Make a very detailed schedule of events for the entire weekend. Include phone numbers of important people and vendors and addresses of all places. Make a column that includes who needs to be at each event. Send the schedule to the entire wedding party, family members, and vendors so no one has an excuse to stress you out with questions on the day of.

5Put together a list of family members that you want in each photograph and send it to your photographer before the wedding. You’ll want to get pictures over with as soon as possible after the ceremony and before the reception and this makes it very smooth. The photographer will have the list and just need to call out the names of who is in the picture, snap, next!

6Have a catchy hashtag but try to make sure it’s not super common. You’ll have so much fun at the airport the next day checking out all of the pictures your guests took. I didn’t see my phone the entire day of the wedding, which meant I had to rely on other people to post pictures, and my photographer of course!

7Go with the flow. It’s really easy to let little things get on your nerves but it takes away from the happiness of the day. I had a few bridezilla moments that I felt guilty about the next day. Take a deep breath and remember that all of these people are there for YOU and want YOU to be happy.

8Before you leave the venue for the night make sure that you remembered everything! I got on the bus back to the hotel forgetting my veil, lipstick, and Evan’s extra tux shirt—not to mention we also forgot our marriage license and had to go back the next day! You will put things in the most random spots throughout the day and completely forget to check around before you head out due to excitement and exhaustion.

9Go on a honeymoon right away (if possible). My husband had to change his schedule for the entire year just to make sure we had enough time off to honeymoon after our wedding—but it was so worth it. You will be exhausted, your voice nearly gone, and in need of some serious R&R after a weekend packed with events. It also let’s you keep soaking in the joy for a little longer before going back to real life.

10Write thank you notes as you open each gift. If this means that boxes sit unopened for a little while, that’s better! We let ours pile up and not only did people have to wait a while for their note, but it also overwhelmed us because we were having to write 10+ a night. Keep a detailed list so you remember each one.

Extra Credit: Exercise throughout your engagement. Looking great will help you feel your best but it also will help you de stress. Yoga and Mimosas with Corepower at The Roosevelt Hotel

The best thing about Los Angeles is that it is perfect year-round for outdoor workouts. Unlike New York and Chicago where you barely manage to avoid frostbite rushing from the subway to your class, LA hosts various outside sweat sessions in the “coldest” months. I finally had the chance to try one of the most popular ones, yoga at the Roosevelt Hotel pool.

How to Go From Never Working Out to Enjoying It

Lots of people say, “I don’t really workout,” meanwhile you run into them getting a nice little jog in several days a week. So when I tell you I didn’t work out until last week, I want you to know what sedentary meant to me. I’d walk to and from law school each day and that was it. Zip. Zero. Nothing else. Okay . . . maybe getting some groceries too.

I can’t really tell you an inspirational story of why I decided to begin working out because it’s a culmination of many things. Watching my formerly inactive friends drop like flies and join the workout revolution definitely inspired me. But mainly, I resented them because they left me alone on the couch.

A decision to get fit can’t be a decision made by someone else. I lived with a marathoner for a bit and dated one as well. If those two couldn’t get me off the couch, no one could. I might be a tiny bit stubborn.

So how did this couch potato turn into a workout whiz, and I promise this isn’t a sponsored post? ClassPass. I didn’t want to like it! Call me contrarian, but I didn’t understand how smart women of all ages fell to pieces at the sight of a Pure Barre or other fancy fitness studios. Then I tried 5 classes in 7 days and you should too! Why you might ask?

  1. I’ve woken up sore every day this past week. Not the crippling kind of soreness, but the kind you get that leaves you feeling accomplished.
  2. I haven’t had any trouble falling asleep at night. I’m too tired after a class.
  3. I’ve felt out of my comfort zone. Not knowing what you are doing is not fun, but the instructors and other people in the classes are very nice and willing to help.
  4. I’ve gotten some good stories out of the experience. I swung forward at aerial yoga and nearly kicked a girl. If looks could kill, I’d be dead. At barre, my tuck looked like I was performing a lewd act on the bar. I’m getting better though.
  5. I’m having fun!

It is not going to be an overnight transition. I have not lost any weight yet, but by my second spin at FlyWheel, the class was much easier for me. I’m feeling stronger. I look forward to trying theses classes again and I look forward to trying new ones too.

We’re Married!

I’ve felt a lot more like a wedding blogger than a fitness blogger for the past couple of weeks, but there is no more exciting time in my life than getting married and I just had to share my joy! After months of planning and perfecting, the day has quickly come and gone–and I am forever thankful for the memories and pictures!

My amazing wedding photographer, Katelyn James, knows how hard it is for a girl to wait for her pics and sent a giant preview of ours to me within days. I don’t want to admit how much time I spent in Maui trying to mentally relive my day instead of frolicking in the ocean with my new hubby. Turns out, that ever-so-popular NYC yoga tribe decided to head west for a special Thursday through Sunday pop up at the end of August. Y7 teamed up with Rebecca Minkoff’s new Melrose store opening and hosted classes in the back multipurpose space—complete with a heater to really give add the “hot” to the yoga.

I’ve always wanted to be an athlete. I’ve dreamed of running through a tunnel of high-fives. The crowd would be shouting my name. I would score the game-winning point. Daydreams…right? That’s not to say I didn’t play sports in school, but I was mediocre at best. Ever felt the same way? I think Nike can change that mentality. After training with them, now I am an athlete.

Back in April, Rachael and I were lucky enough to attend The Nike Training Club Tour event (which was partially sponsored by ClassPass this year!). We were absolutely spoiled. The weekly Nike Training Club events, maybe not on the same scale as their tour, are no exception in treating the attendees like rockstars.

Cauliflower Fried Rice

I am deathly afraid of the kitchen. While most people have some sort of chef intuition about when something is ready or what extra spices can be added to give a dish a little flavor, I’m over here trying to figure out how to turn on the burner. As my wedding is approaching quickly (aka this weekend!), I’ve had some fears about living up to the wife title. Every hard working husband deserves to come home to some grub occasionally, right? Especially when mine works insane hours at the hospital, I feel like it’s the least I can do (I’m saying this after not having cooked for one year).
