I’ve always wanted to be an athlete. I’ve dreamed of running through a tunnel of high-fives. The crowd would be shouting my name. I would score the game-winning point. Daydreams…right? That’s not to say I didn’t play sports in school, but I was mediocre at best. Ever felt the same way? I think Nike can change that mentality. After training with them, now I am an athlete.

Back in April, Rachael and I were lucky enough to attend The Nike Training Club Tour event (which was partially sponsored by ClassPass this year!). We were absolutely spoiled. The weekly Nike Training Club events, maybe not on the same scale as their tour, are no exception in treating the attendees like rockstars.

Cauliflower Fried Rice

I am deathly afraid of the kitchen. While most people have some sort of chef intuition about when something is ready or what extra spices can be added to give a dish a little flavor, I’m over here trying to figure out how to turn on the burner. As my wedding is approaching quickly (aka this weekend!), I’ve had some fears about living up to the wife title. Every hard working husband deserves to come home to some grub occasionally, right? Especially when mine works insane hours at the hospital, I feel like it’s the least I can do (I’m saying this after not having cooked for one year).

When Wanderlust opened a brick and mortar yoga mecca right down the street, I signed up on the listserv immediately. Little did I know, they would send everyone on the list a coupon for five free classes. SCORE! From yoga to meditation, breath work to “chillax”, Wanderlust has the most well rounded schedule I’ve seen at a yoga studio. Not to mention the space also offers a restaurant with seasonal food and fresh juices. You could easily spend the day there, and I hope to spend many days there.

Shape House

LA is full of health and wellness treatments that promise wonderful effects. After my cryotherapy session I decided to test out the opposite end of the thermometer and try FAR infrared sweating. What is this, you ask? These healthy, safe waves of invisible light increase your body’s core temperature causing a deep-penetration sweat that help cleanse and rejuvenate. Basically you get all wrapped up in a sleeping bag that gives off heat and your body works to try to regulate its temperature by sweating like crazy.

IMG_0111I went to the Larchmont Shape House that has plenty of metered and street parking. Armed with a long sleeve shirt and sports bra, I headed inside. I was given a glass bottle of their house made alkaline water to tote around with me throughout the session that I happily started sipping as I filled out the waiver. Once complete, I was ushered into the bathroom to change into the provided sweat uniform: gigantic grey sweatpants and long socks. While you can bring clothes, it’s much easier to borrow…sweaty clothes aren’t fun to bring home, I learned with my shirt and bra.

IMG_0124Fully covered, I was escorted to the sweat room, which is partitioned by curtains into private pods including a bed and TV. As I was tucked in for my 55-minute session, I browsed the television full of Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, HBO, Ted Talks, and more, landing on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The sleeping bag was Velcroed in at the sides and she taught me out how to escape if I felt too hot. Everything but my head was covered and I started sweating surprisingly quickly.

IMG_0129For the next 55 minutes, I progressively went from “it’s getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes” to “holy crap my butt is on fire”, but the heat never felt so overpowering that I had to get out. Although every inch of me was sweating, I noticed it most in my face. I had to keep taking my right arm out to wipe drops trying to make their way into my eyes and mouth. Every once in while I also peeked my arm out to take sips of the water, knowing my body was losing a lot.

Someone came to check on me every once in a while but the most magical one was when, twenty minutes before my session was complete, she came bearing gifts: a cool lavender towel. Hallelujah! She put the towel over my forehead and it cooled me off just the right amount to make it through. It was getting pretty crazy at this point because my heart started to pound just like it does during a cardio class.

IMG_0141When time was up, she helped me get out of the sleeping bag and led me into the relaxation room where I cooled down and nibbled on orange slices as my heart rate slowed. According to Shape House, one session can burn between 800 and 1600 calories and has the same effect on the heart as would a 10-mile run and the same perspiration as a 12-mile run. It is truly a unique feeling. Once I felt my internal temperature come back to normal, I headed into the shower and finally removed my sopping wet clothing. On the way out I filled my personal water bottle with their alkaline water in order to hydrate faster.

I will definitely be back to Shape House. I felt so refreshed after my sweat and slept like a baby that night. I will say, I had a slight headache from lack of water although I was trying to drink as much as possible! They recommend that you drink one gallon of water within the 24 hours of your sweat.

Interested in trying Shape House? One session is $45 or you can buy 10 for $350. They also offer a variety of memberships that you can find here.

Alright ‘Sweat and Repeat’ readers, you caught me wrap-handed! I’ve avoided writing this review because Robot Fight & Fitness is one of my favorite studios and I didn’t want the secret to get out! A couple years ago, way before I started my ClassPass adventure, I walked into ‘Robot’ and secretly hoping it was a film company with a similar name.  To my surprise it was full of people working out and fighting. Overwhelmed and nowhere near the motivated ClassPasser I am now, I ran out as quickly as I came in! Now, I love it, and can’t wait to tell you more.

Robot Fight and Fitness has one of the largest mat spaces in Los Angeles (3000 sq. ft.) and can have up to four classes going at a time. The facility also includes an Olympic lifting area and a ring for practice matches. While most people look to ‘Robot’ for MMA, Muay Thai, and BJJ training (it’s a great studio for beginners and the instructors are amazing), I think I’ve found my home at Robot Fit classes. Robot Fit is a strength and conditioning program, the studio’s alterative to Crossfit without the injuries associated with that style of workout.

Body Fat Scan at BodySpec

Which weighs more a pound of muscle or a pound of fat?

IMG_9983Ok, stupid question. Obviously, they weigh the same amount; it’s how they look that makes such a difference. When I walked into BodySpec, the display on the table caught my eye right away. While both examples weigh five pounds, it’s the differences in how they look and feel that make you gasp—proving that weight is more complex than just a number on a scale.

When Elaine, co-founder of BodySpec, reached out about coming in to get my body fat tested, I immediately said yes. I’ve wanted to do this for a while but the only method I knew about was the dunk tank—and getting into a bathing suit to figure out how much of my body was fat did NOT sound fun. Not to mention that I had no idea where you could even get that done.

BodySpec recently opened a storefront in West LA (and also has a fleet of mobile testing trucks that travel throughout CA) to give people access DXA scanners that measure and map your body’s muscle, fat, and bone. Among other benefits, the results can be used to pinpoint the exact impact of your workouts down to specific areas of muscle development and fat loss, all in less than 10 minutes and completely dry.

Wtrmln Mimosa

There are few things better than brunch. French toast, bacon, waffles, chia pudding, avocado toast—and it’s all acceptable. While those foods are glutinous and delicious, my favorite brunch treat is hands-down the mimosa. When else is it respectable to day drink post-college? At brunch, of course!

wtrmln_moet_2Summer is one of the better seasons for a boozy brunch. The sun is out and everyone is a bit more relaxed so it’s easy to throw on a romper, some Ray-Bans, and meet up with friends. It’s also the perfect time for the refreshing watermelon juice. Watermelon juice, which is quickly becoming the new coconut water, has 6x the electrolytes of sports drinks, is packed with antioxidants like Vitamin C and lycopene, and is full of L-Citrulline, which has been shown to improve exercise performance. I’m currently crushing on Wtrmln Wtr because the ingredients are simply watermelon and lemon—there is no sugar or water added and it’s cold-pressed.wtrmln_inside_5

Wtrmln Wtr sent over some of their delicious beverage and, feeling a little inspired, I decided to change up the mimosa game and make some DIY concoctions. In true LA fashion, this included a photoshoot. Not only is this spritzer delicious and gorgeous, but also it’s the perfect post-sweat treat!

Champagne
Fresh mint leaves

Mix two parts Wtrmln Wtr to one part champagne.
Rub mint in your (clean) hands or chop finely in order to extract the flavor.
Add to drink. Stir and enjoy!

Feeling adventurous? Add more color and flavor to the drink by crushing blackberries at the bottom of the glass. Fill with Wtrmln Wtr, champagne, and mint and enjoy!

FullSizeRenderCold is so hot right now.

I saw a bag at Cold & Thirsty sporting this mantra and it couldn’t be truer. The ice-cold air frothing in my Instagram pic got some great comments, people wondering what in the world is it? My fiancé couldn’t believe or imagine that I actually stood in such a cold space without…freezing to death. Well I’m here to tell you what it is, why it’s trendy, and why it could be for you.

Cryotherapy was developed in Japan in 1978. The cryosauna is a full body machine that cools to a chilly -230 degrees and below using liquid nitrogen. Standing inside the machine for up to three minutes has many benefits including anti-inflammation, weight loss, stress relief, anti-aging, increase in metabolism, increase in energy, mood improvement, and decrease in injury recovery time by up to 50%.
