Shape House

LA is full of health and wellness treatments that promise wonderful effects. After my cryotherapy session I decided to test out the opposite end of the thermometer and try FAR infrared sweating. What is this, you ask? These healthy, safe waves of invisible light increase your body’s core temperature causing a deep-penetration sweat that help cleanse and rejuvenate. Basically you get all wrapped up in a sleeping bag that gives off heat and your body works to try to regulate its temperature by sweating like crazy.

IMG_0111I went to the Larchmont Shape House that has plenty of metered and street parking. Armed with a long sleeve shirt and sports bra, I headed inside. I was given a glass bottle of their house made alkaline water to tote around with me throughout the session that I happily started sipping as I filled out the waiver. Once complete, I was ushered into the bathroom to change into the provided sweat uniform: gigantic grey sweatpants and long socks. While you can bring clothes, it’s much easier to borrow…sweaty clothes aren’t fun to bring home, I learned with my shirt and bra.

IMG_0124Fully covered, I was escorted to the sweat room, which is partitioned by curtains into private pods including a bed and TV. As I was tucked in for my 55-minute session, I browsed the television full of Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, HBO, Ted Talks, and more, landing on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The sleeping bag was Velcroed in at the sides and she taught me out how to escape if I felt too hot. Everything but my head was covered and I started sweating surprisingly quickly.

IMG_0129For the next 55 minutes, I progressively went from “it’s getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes” to “holy crap my butt is on fire”, but the heat never felt so overpowering that I had to get out. Although every inch of me was sweating, I noticed it most in my face. I had to keep taking my right arm out to wipe drops trying to make their way into my eyes and mouth. Every once in while I also peeked my arm out to take sips of the water, knowing my body was losing a lot.

Someone came to check on me every once in a while but the most magical one was when, twenty minutes before my session was complete, she came bearing gifts: a cool lavender towel. Hallelujah! She put the towel over my forehead and it cooled me off just the right amount to make it through. It was getting pretty crazy at this point because my heart started to pound just like it does during a cardio class.

IMG_0141When time was up, she helped me get out of the sleeping bag and led me into the relaxation room where I cooled down and nibbled on orange slices as my heart rate slowed. According to Shape House, one session can burn between 800 and 1600 calories and has the same effect on the heart as would a 10-mile run and the same perspiration as a 12-mile run. It is truly a unique feeling. Once I felt my internal temperature come back to normal, I headed into the shower and finally removed my sopping wet clothing. On the way out I filled my personal water bottle with their alkaline water in order to hydrate faster.

I will definitely be back to Shape House. I felt so refreshed after my sweat and slept like a baby that night. I will say, I had a slight headache from lack of water although I was trying to drink as much as possible! They recommend that you drink one gallon of water within the 24 hours of your sweat.

Interested in trying Shape House? One session is $45 or you can buy 10 for $350. They also offer a variety of memberships that you can find here.

Body Fat Scan at BodySpec

Which weighs more a pound of muscle or a pound of fat?

IMG_9983Ok, stupid question. Obviously, they weigh the same amount; it’s how they look that makes such a difference. When I walked into BodySpec, the display on the table caught my eye right away. While both examples weigh five pounds, it’s the differences in how they look and feel that make you gasp—proving that weight is more complex than just a number on a scale.

When Elaine, co-founder of BodySpec, reached out about coming in to get my body fat tested, I immediately said yes. I’ve wanted to do this for a while but the only method I knew about was the dunk tank—and getting into a bathing suit to figure out how much of my body was fat did NOT sound fun. Not to mention that I had no idea where you could even get that done.

BodySpec recently opened a storefront in West LA (and also has a fleet of mobile testing trucks that travel throughout CA) to give people access DXA scanners that measure and map your body’s muscle, fat, and bone. Among other benefits, the results can be used to pinpoint the exact impact of your workouts down to specific areas of muscle development and fat loss, all in less than 10 minutes and completely dry.

Wtrmln Mimosa

There are few things better than brunch. French toast, bacon, waffles, chia pudding, avocado toast—and it’s all acceptable. While those foods are glutinous and delicious, my favorite brunch treat is hands-down the mimosa. When else is it respectable to day drink post-college? At brunch, of course!

wtrmln_moet_2Summer is one of the better seasons for a boozy brunch. The sun is out and everyone is a bit more relaxed so it’s easy to throw on a romper, some Ray-Bans, and meet up with friends. It’s also the perfect time for the refreshing watermelon juice. Watermelon juice, which is quickly becoming the new coconut water, has 6x the electrolytes of sports drinks, is packed with antioxidants like Vitamin C and lycopene, and is full of L-Citrulline, which has been shown to improve exercise performance. I’m currently crushing on Wtrmln Wtr because the ingredients are simply watermelon and lemon—there is no sugar or water added and it’s cold-pressed.wtrmln_inside_5

Wtrmln Wtr sent over some of their delicious beverage and, feeling a little inspired, I decided to change up the mimosa game and make some DIY concoctions. In true LA fashion, this included a photoshoot. Not only is this spritzer delicious and gorgeous, but also it’s the perfect post-sweat treat!

Mix two parts Wtrmln Wtr to one part champagne.
Rub mint in your (clean) hands or chop finely in order to extract the flavor.

Feeling adventurous? Add more color and flavor to the drink by crushing blackberries at the bottom of the glass. Fill with Wtrmln Wtr, champagne, and mint and enjoy!

I saw a bag at Cold & Thirsty sporting this mantra and it couldn’t be truer. The ice-cold air frothing in my Instagram pic got some great comments, people wondering what in the world is it? My fiancé couldn’t believe or imagine that I actually stood in such a cold space without…freezing to death. Well I’m here to tell you what it is, why it’s trendy, and why it could be for you.

10 Things Your Group Fitness Instructor Wants You to Know

As a group fitness instructor, it is my job to guide you through a safe, effective, and hopefully fun workout. I teach 20+ classes a week and spend at least that many hours preparing class formats and playlists. Despite all of that prep and planning, YOU are what makes a class great! Here are a few things you can do before and during class to ensure that you get the most out of your group fitness experience:

1Be on time. Early is on time. On time is late. Plan to show up a minimum of 5 minutes ahead of time, 10 to 15 if it is your first class. This is especially important for classes with personal equipment settings (ex: spin). No one is perfect and things happen, but do your best to be ready to work at the scheduled start time.

2Tell me if it is your first time! When instructors ask if anyone is new, we aren’t trying to call you out or embarrass you; it just changes our approach. For example, if everyone has been to class before, we might forgo an extensive overview of equipment or class format. We also might explain exercises differently or work at a different pace. Speak up! Everyone was a newbie at some point and we want you to have the best, and safest, first experience possible.

3Be mindful of your placement in class. If you have never taken a particular class before, or know that you will need to modify, don’t put yourself front and center, but don’t hide either. If you will need some guidance, make yourself accessible for your instructor. On the other hand, if you are a regular and you know you can keep up with the pace of the class, step up and be a leader in the front. You don’t have to have flawless form or hit every single rep to be a great example for newer students but it is a great way to step up your game and push your limits.

4Bring water. I know this seems like a common sense “duh” statement, but so many people neglect to bring water to class. Everyone needs water. Even if you don’t like to drink during class, you should be hydrating immediately after. Little things like this can affect your results more than you think.

5Be prepared. It doesn’t take long to check a website (the studio’s or Sweat and Repeat) or make a phone call to find out if you need to bring anything to class. Ask if you will need shoes, a towel, grip socks, a mat, etc. Having everything that you need ensures you get the best and safest workout possible.

6Listen! Process what your instructor says before you decide that you know better. A great instructor will often explain why, but sometimes we don’t have time to explain every detail of the method to our madness. You’re paying good money for our professional guidance. Trust the process unless an instructor has given you a reason not to. Unfortunately, as with anything in life, there are going to be a few bad apples out there. If someone is asking you to do something way above your ability, or an exercise that doesn’t seem safe, you reserve the right to sit it out or modify. Trust us, but don’t allow yourself to be bullied.

7Be humble. Know your limits but also know that challenging your body and getting out of your comfort zone is the only way to create change. When necessary, grab a lighter weight, work at a slower pace, or use a more beginner modification. Sometimes it actually takes more strength, discipline, and body awareness to know when it’s time to pull back. It’s not weak, it’s smart.

8Disclose injuries. Or course I’m not a doctor, but if you have any kind of injury or issue, tell me. I will monitor your form and give you appropriate modifications.

9Contribute. When I ask how you are, I really want to know. If you’re not crazy about being vocal, give me a thumbs up, a head nod, something! If you’re non-responsive, I don’t have much to work from. If you are worried you’ll be the only person who responds, don’t be. You’ll win your instructor’s heart forever if you contribute vocally in an otherwise silent group.

10Good vibes only. Class is your time. Every bit of work you put in comes back to you, and your workout is a great time to work through stress. When you walk in to a class, you are joining a team. Your energy affects the people around you, and vice versa. We all have bad days, even your instructors, but when you walk in to class you should hit the “pause” button on your bad day. Be present and focus on the current moment, work hard, and I promise you you’ll leave feeling at least little lighter and happier.

Daybreaker with Fitness4Purpose

Flash tats, body paint, crop tops, glow in the dark bracelets, music blasting, people jumping. The drug of choice is caffeine and partiers are chugging drinks thickened with chia seeds. It’s dark outside, but not for obvious reasons. Nope, it’s not midnight. This rave is happening before the crack of dawn and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

IMG_9557

With Saara, the founder of Fitness4Purpose

Daybreaker is an early morning dance party that originated in NYC and is making it’s way across the world—including cities such as Amsterdam, Tel Aviv, and Hong Kong. I’ve been dying to go since it came to LA, but couldn’t convince anyone to join me in setting an alarm for 5:30 AM so when Saara, the founder of Fitness4Purporse, reached out, I couldn’t say no.

Fitness4Purpose is a fitness challenge fundraiser that brings people together to explore a variety of workouts throughout LA while supporting a good cause. With their first challenge starting July 19, 2015, a group of 15 people set out to workout for 22 days straight and raise $35,000 to build a school in Nepal with the nonprofit organization buildOn. From Orangetheory to Aura Cycle, Hot8Yoga to Barry’s Bootcamp, these motivated individuals will sweat with a purpose.

IMG_7201

The Fitness4Purpose Group!

Daybreaker started at 5:30 AM with a one-hour yoga sesh that I opted out of. The real party was from 6:30-8:30, ending right in time to make it to work. This one took place at The Springs in DTLA and I was so excited to join despite not knowing anyone there. I checked in and met up with Saara outside who immediately took me under her wing and introduced me to the Fitness4Purpose team. They were all so welcoming and treated me like one of their own as we broke it down on the dance floor together. We raved to beats by DJ Dan and sipped on beverages by Groundwork coffee, Icelandic, Just Chill, Hint, and Mamma Chia. It was sweaty, exhilarating, exhausting, and energizing all at once.

IMG_9545Fitness4Purpose will be sweating around town until August 9th and I hope to be able to meet up with them at another inspiring workout!

Interested in attending Daybreaker? Sign up for the mailing list to see where the next rave is located. Usually there are two a month in LA, one downtown and one on the west side.

Interested in sweating for a cause with Fitness4Purpose? Check out the website, watch Saara’s moving video, and contact her to join! You can also find them on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @FITNESS4PURPOSE.

How to Sweat like a Pro

While I originally published this post in October, a week after I started my blog, I wanted to bring it back for those of you who weren’t Sweat and Repeat readers at the time. I understand that my fitness obsession can be daunting to some and if you haven’t worked out or been to a group class in a while, it can be a little intimidating. I’ve put together a list of DOs and DON’Ts that will make you look like a regular at any new studio!

DO tell the front desk if you’re new—they’ll let you know what you need to grab to set up.
DO arrive a bit early to peek around the studio for perks and amenities.
DO check out the studio online to make sure you bring the things you need and wear the proper attire.
DO keep in mind that some people are less experienced than you, but some will always be more experienced than you as well. That is the beauty of group fitness. Focus on yourself and what is best for you.
DO make eye contact with classmates during torturous moves to ensure that you are all equally miserable.
DO ask the instructor any questions you have after class—hitting all the moves correctly makes your workout productive and keeps your body safe!
DO strike up a conversation on your way out—suggest grabbing a juice at the place next door. Who knows? She could be a new best friend!

DON’T be late—some classes won’t let you in after the start time but will charge you for the class. Research or call ahead to figure out the parking situation.
DON’T forget the rules of personal space when picking your spot in the room.
DON’T get overconfident when choosing weights—if everyone has a set of 1 pounders, it’s probably for a good reason.
DON’T forget a water bottle. Even if you can’t bring it into the room, hydrating after a workout is essential!
DON’T be afraid to mention any recent or healing injuries to the instructor—they will make sure to modify throughout the class.
DON’T worry about what other people think of you in class. You are there for your own personal gain, not to show off or compete with other classmates (although competition may sometimes be encouraged in other ways during class).
DON’T hesitate to try a harder option if the instructor offers it; even if you don’t nail it, everyone starts somewhere.

No matter if you ace all of these tips or not, the most important thing is just getting out there and giving it your best. The only workout you’ll regret is the one you didn’t do.

How do you feel when you go to a studio for the first time? Do you have any other tips from your personal experiences? I’d love to hear them in the comments!

AIR Aerial Fitness Blogger Event Recap

What do you get when you mix 40 of LA’s top bloggers with aerial fitness hammocks? Two hours of nonstop, upside down selfies in the cutest athletic apparel.

IMG_8801

Last Thursday I had the opportunity to attend a blogger event hosted by AIR Aerial Fitness and organized by Riot Media Group. When I arrived, I was given a top by gwenyth and a pair of leggings by Emily Hsu. Both companies are LA based, which I am so happy to support. The top was a gorgeous shade of light pink with ruching on the side and crisscross straps—it also came with a matching headband. My leggings were from the “not so basic black” line and had a snakeskin look to them. They can be worn high waisted or folded over and are long enough to wear over your heel.

IMG_8782

After a quick wardrobe change into the much more fashionable ensemble, I headed outside to the braid bar. The girls from DryBar were amazing and transformed my drab hair into a gorgeous crown braid. After a few spritzes of hairspray I was off to the silks. Everyone was a bit more interested in the pretty pictures than the sweaty lunges, but we did a mixture of both! With the help of Lindsay, AIR Los Angeles owner, I managed to learn a couple new moves. If you’ve never done an aerial class, you’d be shocked at how much upper body strength and flexibility it requires. OUCH! Props to all those aerialists, I applaud you!

Once I had chosen the perfect Instagram picture and filter, I grabbed a salad sampler from Sweetgreen. Their kale caesar is my go-to and I usually make a bold move and add corn when I’m in the restaurant. There’s nothing yummier than the parmesan crisps.

Thank you again to gwenyth, Emily Hsu, AIR, and Riot Media Group for having me!

Since moving to LA one year ago I have tried things that I didn’t even know existed. I’ve splurged on $12 smoothies at Beaming, climbed a stationary Versa climber as lights pulsed overhead at Rise Nation, and vibrated on a Power Plate at Xcceleration Station. However, nothing could prepare me for this adventure. Let’s just say there was absolutely no sweat involved. Continue reading
